Critics say that carrageenan causes inflammation problems, digestive troubles and colon health troubles. They say this gelatin found in products lie cottage cheese and soy milk makes them sick and makes it downright impossible to enjoy these foods. In response to these complaints, a great number of manufacturers discontinued the use of the additive in their products. Many products, however, still contain the ingredient, leaving many to wonder is carrageenan safe or should it be avoided?
The truth is, when consumed in moderation, there is no reason to worry that carrageenan is harmful. More alarming than this ingredient is the actual types of foods that you choose to eat each day. The FDA approved carrageenan for both food purposes as well as for medicinal purposes in some cases.
A small number of people may suffer adverse effects of Carrageenan, but this number is less than 2% of those who consume it. And, we all consume at least minimal amounts of the additive regularly. Many of us are even unaware that we’re consuming it.
If you are thinking about the study that was conducted all of those years ago that indicated carrageenan caused problems with colon health, the digestive track, etc. do not be alarmed. Many people are unaware that there are two different types of carrageenan. One is approved for use by the FDA and is the one that is used in the foods that you consume. The second is not approved by the FDA and may very well cause a number of problems if consumed.
You have a lot worse things in life to worry about than carrageenan. While a handful of people may experience sickness, the majority of individuals tolerate the substance well. There should be no reason to worry that you will be any different from the majority of the population.
